Hi Everyone!

The Mesa Police department recently learned of a possible scam involving door to door sales people for a legitimate company in our area.  Although we are still investigating, there is a possibility that we have some incidents of a possible imposter recently.  Just to be safe, I am sending you these tips and hoping you will share with others in your area:

1)      Never give out your Social Security Number to anyone coming to your door.

2)      If you want to purchase a service from someone, get their full name and call the actual company yourself to give them the necessary information.  Look up the actual company number, don’t use one they give you.  This way, if they are legitimate, they will still get credit for the sale.

3)      Never give a deposit without asking for their ID and getting a receipt.  Legitimate companies have their employees wear a Picture ID Badge at all times.  Never give them cash or a credit card number.  If you must make a payment to a field representative, write them a check using Gel Ink.  Again, contact the company first to confirm that this person is one of their representatives and that they are authorized to accept deposits or payments in the field.

4)      Never let anyone into your home without first confirming who they are and that they are a legitimate employee of the company they appear to be representing.  If they are an employee, they won’t mind waiting while you check.  Also, be sure you have no valuables in plain sight and stay with the employee at all times while they are in your home.

5)      Once you have confirmed that they are a legitimate employee, ask for a work order number or a confirmation number and be sure that you have written down their full name and the date and time they were at your home for future reference.  Do not sign any contract or other papers that are not completely filled out – blank lines, no signature!!
